I used to be in love with huge guitar swells, and I\u2019ve fallen back in love with them\u2014just in my older brain. \u2018New Wave\u2019 is a reference to feeling like, \u2018This thing is going to hit me\u2019. You\u2019re either going to get in the ocean or lay in the sand. It\u2019s not even up to you. You\u2019re not sure when it\u2019s going to happen, but it\u2019s going to happen. How do you prepare for it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/femmusic.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Tenterhooks2.jpg\" alt=\"Tenterhooks \" class=\"wp-image-113861\" srcset=\"https:\/\/femmusic.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Tenterhooks2-600x445.jpg 600w, https:\/\/femmusic.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Tenterhooks2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/femmusic.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Tenterhooks2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Silversun Pickups\u2019s <em>Tenterhooks <\/em>will be released on February 6th via their label, New Machine Recordings. For the album, the band \u2014Brian Aubert [vocals, guitar], Nikki Monninger [bass, vocals], Christopher Guanlao [drums], and Joe Lester [keys]\u2014reunited with producer Butch Vig to create an emotionally charged and unapologetic collection of ten tracks appropriate for the times, yet as timeless as anything they\u2019ve done. \u201cWe wanted to make a tight record that could fit on one vinyl with five songs on each side,\u201d says Aubert. \u201cTo me, it\u2019s an impatient, apprehensive, and more aggressive album. We started recording when the world was changing again. You invariably wonder, \u2018What are we headed towards?\u2019 Even if you\u2019re not necessarily writing about it, it bleeds into how you\u2019re feeling and approaching life. We stripped things down and went louder and rawer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Silversun Pickups had finished touring in 2024 and enjoyed a rare break. During the downtime, Aubert saved voice memos, riffs, and other ideas as they came to him. Before he knew it, he found himself back in the studio with his bandmates and longtime producer Butch Vig [Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage]. After two records together, they had perfected a real-time exchange of ideas. The musicians grabbed their instruments and jammed live as the producer listened and recorded. The album took shape seamlessly, but life intervened. Butch had commitments on the road with Garbage, taking him away from the studio. Aubert meanwhile went through one of the worst nightmares imaginable for any artist: he lost hearing in one ear. During a seven-day stay in the hospital, he even received a blood transfusion. \u201cI had a hole in my ear drum,\u201d he recalls. \u201cThey couldn\u2019t figure out why I was losing blood, so they gave me the transfusion. We found out there was a rupture in my stomach lining due to the ibuprofen I was taking for the pain. That\u2019s why I had been losing blood. One day, I was finally hearing again.\u201d Eventually, the band regrouped with Vig and concluded the sessions. The title referenced the phrase, \u201cOn Tenterhooks.\u201d \u201cThere was something in the air,\u201d he observes. \u201cIt seemed as if everyone was on Tenterhooks waiting for whatever was next. The music has the same feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opener \u201cNew Wave\u201d alternates between heavenly and hard-hitting. A massive palm-muted riff carries the harmony on the chorus. Its sublime chug dissolves in the wake of an evocative solo soaked in reverb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAu Revoir Reservoir\u201d revolves around a snappy groove, ethereal keys, off-kilter horns, and a lush vocal from Monninger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, there\u2019s \u201cLong Gone.\u201d Frantically strummed acoustic chords rush ahead at the pace of a late-night escape. Strings echo in the distance, and Aubert assures, \u201cI\u2019ll be long gone before we break it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The finale \u201cHot-Wired\u201d offers a fitting bookend. Feedback cackles and buzzes, increasing the voltage with kinetic synths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tenterhooks represents both a full circle moment and a natural step forward for Aubert and band. Silversun Pickups cut their teeth on the East Side of Los Angeles, honing an inimitable style by playing nonstop. Their full-length debut, <em>Carnavas<\/em> [2006], went Gold and spawned the Platinum staple \u201cLazy Eye.\u201d On its heels, they logged two back-to-back Top 10 entries on the Billboard 200 with <em>Swoon<\/em> [2009]\u2014featuring the Gold-certified \u201cPanic Switch\u201d\u2014and <em>Neck of the Woods<\/em> [2012]. \u201cWe\u2019ve been a band for 25 years,\u201d Aubert says. \u201cI never would\u2019ve imagined we would\u2019ve been able to do this for so long. Somehow, we\u2019re here. I\u2019m thrilled we\u2019re a band that people still find.
